Grenoble restera finalement à gauche, après douze ans de gestion par « l’arc humaniste » de l’écologiste Éric Piolle. L’incertitude planait pourtant sur le second tour de la ville iséroise : d’un côté, Laurence Ruffin, soutenue par les Écologistes et les Socialistes, portait la promesse d’une continuité de règne à gauche. De l’autre, l'ex-maire RPR Alain Carignon, arrivé en tête au soir du premier tour sous la bannière des Républicains, tentait de ravir le trône à la Gauche, quarante ans après son élection.

Grenoble will ultimately remain under left-wing leadership, following twelve years of administration by the ‘humanist alliance’ led by the Green Party’s Éric Piolle. Yet uncertainty hung over the second round of voting in the Isère city: on the one hand, Laurence Ruffin, backed by the Greens and the Socialists, promised continuity of left-wing rule. On the other, former RPR mayor Alain Carignon, who came out on top on the night of the first round under the banner of Les Républicains, was attempting to wrest the throne from the Left, forty years after his election.
