Eté 2026, l'Aven Armand fête le centenaire de son ouverture au tourisme
Rapidement, l’idée de rendre ce site incroyable accessible au public naît dans la tête des trois hommes. Si les premières visites se font avec une échelle de corde en août 1899, il apparaît vite que ce système ne convient pas au grand public. Toutefois, ce n’est qu’en juillet 1926 qu’est créée Société anonyme de l’Aven Armand qui assure le financement des premiers travaux d’aménagement (route d’accès…). Une plateforme équipée d’un treuil permettent des visites plus sûres et confortables. Mais l’idée est surtout de creuser un tunnel de 208 mètres de longueur dans lequel circulera un funiculaire qui débouchera directement dans la grande salle dont les sculptures minérales seront éclairées par Fernand Jacopozzi, l’illuminateur de la Tour Eiffel en 1925. Grâce à ces travaux, l’aven Armand reçoit ses premiers visiteurs dès juin 1927. Cette année, l’Aven Express, nouveau funiculaire, plus rapide et confortable circule, a été inauguré. Depuis son ouverture, l’aven Armand a accueilli près de 10 millions de visiteurs.
In 2026, Aven Armand cave celebrates its opening to public
The three men soon conceived the idea of opening this incredible site to the public. Although initial visits in August 1899 relied on a rope ladder, it quickly became apparent that this method was unsuitable for the general public. However, it was not until July 1926 that the Société anonyme de l’Aven Armand was established to fund the initial development work—such as an access road and a winch-equipped platform—ensuring safer and more comfortable visits. The primary plan, however, was to excavate a 208-meter-long tunnel with a funicular leading directly into the main chamber; this would connect to a series of stairways allowing visitors to explore the heart of the site, with its mineral formations illuminated by Fernand Jacopozzi—the same lighting designer who illuminated the Eiffel Tower in 1925. Thanks to these improvements, Aven Armand welcomed its first visitors in June 1927. This year saw the inauguration of the Aven Express, a new, faster, and more comfortable funicular. Since opening, Aven Armand has welcomed nearly 10 million visitors.
