Palmyre, perle du désert
Située en plein cœur du désert syrien, la célèbre cité antique de Palmyre porte les stigmates de plus d’une décennie de guerre. Pour la plupart originaire de la région, les combattants de groupe Hayat Tahrir al-Cham (HTC) déployés sur place retrouvent une ville ravagée par les combats, auxquels certains ont pris part au début de la révolution. L’ancienne oasis caravanière devenue cité prospère après son passage sous contrôle romain, au premier siècle après Jésus-Christ, a été également été la cible de destructions successives opérées en 2015 par l’Etat Islamique. Les habitants de la ville ont eux aussi payé un lourd tribut face aux exactions menées par les djihadistes lors de leur occupation de la ville. Parmi les 1000 habitants de la ville moderne, contre prés de 50 000 avant la guerre, nombreux craignent un retour du groupe dont les hommes sont encore présents aux alentours. Nouveaux maîtres de la ville, les combattants d’HTC, volontaires, mais sous équipés, ont désormais la lourde tâche de protéger son site archéologique et ses habitants.
Palmyra, pearl of the desert
Located in the heart of the Syrian desert, the famous ancient city of Palmyra bears the scars of more than a decade of war. Most of the Hayat Tahrir al-Cham (HTC) fighters deployed there are from the region, and find the city ravaged by fighting, some of whom took part in the early days of the revolution. The former caravan oasis, which became a prosperous city after coming under Roman control in the first century A.D., was also the target of successive destructions carried out in 2015 by the Islamic State. The city's inhabitants also paid a heavy price in the face of the exactions carried out by the jihadists during their occupation of the city. Many of the modern town's 1,000 inhabitants, compared with almost 50,000 before the war, fear a return by the group, whose men are still present in the surrounding area.
