Damas : attaque terroriste à l'église Der Elias
Le dimanche 22 juin 2025, attentat suicide revendiqué par le groupe djihadiste Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah ,dans une église de Damas - à l'heure de la messe de l'après-midi. Le bilan est de 25 morts et 63 blessés. Les témoins sur place indiquent qu’un homme armé portant une veste explosive a commencé à tirer puis a essayé d’entrer dans l'église. Les plus jeunes paroissiens ont alors tenté de les maintenir près de l'entrée lorsque l'explosion a retenti.
Le jour d'après, les survivants réalisent peu à peu ce qu'ils ont vécu la veille à l'église Mar Elias de Damas, lors de la messe. D'une chambre à l'autre, les médecins de l'hôpital Central s'affairent aux soins des victimes de l'attentat suicide. Julian a 15 ans et devait passer son brevet demain. Il est allé seul à la messe de dimanche et était à l'intérieur quand il a commencé à entendre des coups de feu. Il a reçu 3 balles avant de s'écrouler. Il a fait semblant d'être mort jusqu'à l'arrivée des secours. Siham al Jamal a 52 ans. Elle aussi s'est rendue seule à l'église, car son fils travaillait ce jour-là. C'est plus tard dans la soirée qu'il reçoit un appel de l'hôpital lui annonçant que sa mère avait survécu à l'attentat mais a dû être opérée d'urgence à la jambe. Siham ne sait pas encore qu'elle a été amputée. Entourée de sa famille dans sa chambre d'hôpital, son regard vide témoigne encore du choc de l'attaque.
Plusieurs centaines de personnes se sont aussi réunies dans et devant l'église Mar Elias pour une veillée en mémoire des victimes de l'attentat suicide. Un groupe de chrétiens a ensuite défilé jusqu'à la vieille ville, croix en mains et scandant "le peuple Syrien ne fait qu'un", ou encore "avec notre âme et notre sang, nous défendrons notre Christ".

On Sunday, June 22, 2025, a suicide attack claimed by the jihadist group Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah took place in a church in Damascus during afternoon mass. The death toll was 25, with 63 wounded. Witnesses at the scene reported that an armed man wearing an explosive vest began shooting and then tried to enter the church. The youngest parishioners attempted to hold him back at the entrance when the explosion occurred.
The next day, the survivors gradually realized what they had experienced the day before at Mar Elias Church in Damascus during Mass. From room to room, doctors at the Central Hospital busily treated the victims of the suicide bombing. Julian is 15 years old and was supposed to take his high school diploma exam tomorrow. He went to Sunday mass alone and was inside when he began to hear gunshots. He was hit by three bullets before collapsing. He pretended to be dead until help arrived. Siham al Jamal is 52 years old. She also went to church alone because her son was working that day. Later that evening, he received a call from the hospital telling him that his mother had survived the attack but had to undergo emergency surgery on her leg. Siham does not yet know that her leg has been amputated. Surrounded by her family in her hospital room, her empty gaze still shows the shock of the attack.
Several hundred people also gathered in and in front of Mar Elias Church for a vigil in memory of the victims of the suicide bombing. A group of Christians then marched to the old city, carrying crosses and chanting “the Syrian people are one” and “with our souls and our blood, we will defend our Christ.”
