THE FRANCOPHONIE IN VIETNAM
This series follows the work of a French NGO (Côtes d'Armor Viet-Nam) in Vinh in the province of Nghe An, dedicated to promoting the French-speaking world and learning French. This axis of work is embodied in various linguistic and cultural cooperation actions between France and Vietnam: support for students in their study projects in France and the organization of events on the spot.
French is the fifth most spoken language in the world after Chinese, English, Spanish and Arabic with 300 million speakers. French was the official language of Vietnam from the beginning of French colonization until the middle of the 20th century until independence under the Geneva Agreements, and maintained its de facto official status in the Republic of Vietnam until its disappearance in 1975.
The use of French is a historical fact linked to the presence of French colonization in the region called French Indochina. The image of the French language is struggling to emancipate itself from the colonial past while being comfortably settled in the minds of its speakers as a school language, modern, useful for working and even, sometimes, for doing business.
Through the strengthening of language planning policies, La Francophonie is still seeking to avoid being perceived as a continuation of France's foreign policy in its former colonies.
