THE BOBIGNY WOMEN'S CENTRE
On 10 July, the City of Paris put an end to the practice of providing shelter for under-age girls seeking asylum. From now on, these girls will be forced to remain on the streets, unprotected, for the duration of their appeal. For five years, none of the girls whose initial assessment failed has had to spend a single night on the streets, thanks to the efforts of voluntary organisations, public accommodation providers and the opening of hotel places by the City of Paris in 2020.
Since July 2023, Paris City Council has decided to put an end to hotel accommodation. Many girls found themselves on the streets without any help or protection from the State. Non-profit organisations and a large network of hostesses are working together to ensure the safety, support and accommodation of these young girls.
The Women's House in Bobigny takes in young minors who are appealing to the juvenile court judge to assert their minority status. It is a safe house that gives them a respite for a few months, allowing them to rebuild their lives after the precariousness of the street. The project is run by Utopia 56 and Médecins Sans Frontières as part of the Accueillons programme, which aims to offer these young girls a safe space where they can be accompanied and receive legal, psychological, medical and social support. It is also a time of stability in their daily lives where they can think about and build a personal and professional future.
Over the years, the coordinators and educators have succeeded in creating a protected, caring space where the girls are listened to, supported and guided, while respecting their individual histories and life plans.
