La Ciotat shipyard revives thanks to large yachts
After having known the golden age of large oil tankers and other methane tankers, the shipyard of La Ciotat, one of the largest in France, had to close in 1989. Following a historic strike by its workers, the yard specialised in the refit of super yachts, which saved it. In 2021, it took on 148 boats, and has just inaugurated a platform to strengthen its market share in the restoration of megayachts up to 100 metres in length, the number of which has increased almost fivefold since 2010. "La Ciotat Shipyards is engaged in investment projects not seen in La Ciotat since the 1970s," its website says. "The yacht is a particular luxury object but it makes people work. In contrast, a painting by a great master, it's on the wall, it doesn't bring in anything. The yacht is an immediate direct and indirect source of employment", defends Patrick Ghigonetto, president of La Ciotat Shipyards, where 1200 people work in 45 companies.
