Daily life of the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Solesmes.
Since the 11th century, the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes have lived according to the rule of Saint-Benoît; in search of God and for the salvation of the world. They have taken vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and lead a monastic life of prayer, punctuated by the seven daily religious offices which they celebrate in Latin and by singing Gregorian chants in the abbey church.
Nevertheless, in order to allow the community to continue to live as self-sufficiently as possible and far from the contingencies of time, each monk occupies one or more functions. Thus, some manage the abbey shop or the publishing house, while others teach paleography or work as shoemakers, seamstresses, bakers, cabinetmakers, market gardeners, tree growers, washermen, bookbinders, librarians, organists, or even thanatopractors, as all monks are destined to end their days in the monastery and to be buried in the abbey cemetery.
Each monk therefore organizes himself as best he can to be efficient in his function without deviating from the rule of Saint-Benoît and the unchanging rhythm of the offices: vigils at 5.30 a.m., Lauds at 7.30 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., Sext at 1 p.m., Ninth at 1.50 p.m., Vespers at 5 p.m. until Compline at 8.30 p.m.
