Shenzhen, the other shore
Shenzhen was originally a small fishing village established in 1979 as a ?special economic zone?. Today, it is a megacity of over 17 million inhabitants, separated from Hong Kong by a river that only takes 30 minutes to cross by train.
In just a few years, Shenzhen has become the world s technological factory, where smartphones, smart cards and LED lights are manufactured, and the showcase of China s frantic development. Huge and empty residential suburbs have supplanted former farmland, bordered by coastal avenues where residents wishing to get away from the city stroll. On the horizon, you can see the shore of Hong Kong, just 27 km away.
