THE BEACH TOTEM
The parasol or the temporary privatisation of public space.
Colonised in the era of paid holidays, the beach has become a sociological reality, with its own codes of occupation and cohabitation. It is a shared space where archipelagos of social groups are created. Perimeters are quickly demarcated and divided between family tribes, teenagers, couples and solitary individuals.
Holidays wouldn't be holidays without certain emblematic objects embedded in our collective unconscious. The parasol has been the totem of the summer season since the 1960s, followed by small tents and windbreaks in the 1990s.
They help to define the boundaries of areas that are permitted to some and implicitly forbidden to others.
In a founding gesture, beach-goers plant their parasol like a flag on conquered land. The shade cast extends his territory. It becomes the sign of a temporary privatisation of public space. Protective, the parasol spreads its giant wings. Statutory, it defines the social geography through its colours and patterns.
The photos were taken on the beaches of Saint-Malo and Marseille, in August 2023.
