Republican baptism for Abakar
The Committee for Abakar Gassama organised a rally in front of Audincourt town hall on 13 February 2020. ... people were there to support young Abakar who is threatened with being sent back to his country.
This gathering was the occasion for the Mayor of the city Mr Martial Bourquin to proceed to the republican baptism of Abakar planned for a long time on February 13th. It took place in a very special atmosphere because the main interested party was only present for 1 minute and by telephone.
This 19 year old young man from Guinea is currently at the Administrative Detention Centre in Metz. Abakar received an OQTF in June 2019. The various actions carried out by the individuals and groups that followed him upon his arrival in France on 1 January 2016 have made it possible to postpone the deadline. On 1st February 2021 he will point, as he has done three times a week since he received his OQTF, at the Bethoncourt gendarmerie, but this time he will not get out and will be taken to the Metz CRA.
The support committee but also the Mayor of the city, Mr Martial Bourquin, do not want to hear the decision of the prefecture to have this man sent back to his country by 28th February and want him regularised.
The committee considers the "absurd situation" in view of the fact that young people who find refuge in France, because they are in danger in their country, "learn French and a trade and are threatened with expulsion as soon as they reach their majority".
This story is very similar to that of Laye Traore, the baker's apprentice in Besançon, which received a lot of media attention in January 2021. His boss obtained his regulation following a hunger strike and a petition that collected more than 120,000 signatures.
The petition launched in support of Abakar Gassama reached almost 20,000 signatures.
