Jeu libre
Extrait
Free play
Extract
Inspired by the work of researcher Arno Stern and psychologist Sophie Marinopoulos, I wanted to meet children playing freely and capture the freedom that emanates from it through photography. The importance of this activity - vital for the child - is not well known and too often neglected.
This work, an ode to free play, wishes to defend a space to preserve. A space where the immaterial and the poetic are essential to the construction of the being. Consciously or not, children are often put under pressure and the recent omnipresence of screens overshadows the phases of free time fundamental to the emergence of free play.
In order to photograph free play I met dozens of families, and shared time with children in as many different spaces as possible. I also chose to give an international dimension to my work by setting up shooting sessions in 8 different countries between July 2021 and March 2022.
My work is not based on the staging of a game but created a space where photography is integrated into the game. The game is set up - I am sometimes inside and sometimes outside - and when the camera is forgotten, moments appear where the child expresses all the power of his vital instinct. The game offers a space of joy, momentum and universal spontaneity.
This exhibition is extended by the photographic book Libre (May 2022) accompanied by interviews conducted by Estelle Levresse with Arno Stern, Odile Périno, Pascal Minotte and Sophie Marinopoulos.
