Low-tech & Refugees
The EKO association is present at the Refuge Solidaire de Briançon. She develops Low-tech & Refugees there, which aims to improve the resilience and autonomy of exiles while contributing to the sustainable development of the territory, by disseminating low-tech know-how and systems and by l socio-professional integration via ecological trades. The complexity of migration issues makes conventional humanitarian interventions consisting of providing blankets, food, accommodation solutions, etc. insufficient. In addition to meeting their immediate physiological needs, migrants need to reclaim their individual and collective future. Strengthening the low-tech know-how of migrants has this double impact. Low-technologies are simple technical solutions that meet essential needs (water, food production and conservation, energy, housing, transport, etc.). They are accessible (economically and in terms of know-how) and respectful of the environment (local, renewable or recycled materials, energy-efficient, etc.). These include, for example, wood-saving cookers, wind turbines, agro-ecological techniques, etc. Low-tech is also an approach, that of doing better with less.
