Il me fallait comprendre.
Gauche... Face...
A gauche, l'église.
VISMAVILLE IN CONTAINMENT // AT THE BALCON // Episode 17
We agreed yesterday, I'm taking a break today. No Abbé Derry street at 11:00.
Yesterday, the presence of the "man on the church steps" began to intrigue me. I had to understand. The second thing I needed to know: Would there be a blessing from the Palms. The church is 100 meters from my house.
First step: this man on his pew. And this morning, at 9:00 a.m., he's already there on the pew, and unfortunately, already with one of those little vials of alcohol you find in the bakery aisles. The reason seems to have already left him at this early hour. He's loud, he's agitated. He gets up, flips through one of the books still there, grabs his bag, and leaves.
I watch him leave, his head stuck in his shoulders, rolling and pointing at an imaginary presence.
I have to follow him. I grab my bag always ready to go (so at this moment, with a bottle of water, a notepad, a pen, a marker, masks and gloves, and all the necessary traffic press authorizations for my movements).
I get off, the jacket is half put on, one of my heels still outside the shoes like a child leaving late for school!
Stairs, doors, more doors, outside, right...Left...Face....
On the left, the church. So I make that choice. In the meantime, the second sleeve of the jacket is put on, the heel is tucked into his shoes, and, inevitably, the hands are rubbed with hydro-alcoholic gel. We all get all masochistic about it, actually...
There he is, on the church steps.
It's Palm Sunday. Catherine sent me this morning the link to see the mass at this church. The mass was recorded, so it won't be live today. The church is open. And on her stoop, a cardboard box with huge branches of twigs. On the door, a sheet of A4 banner paper with the inscription: "Blessing of the branches Sunday 9:30 am, then video on the website of the Diocese 92. Help yourself as you leave" with an arrow showing the branches.
The writing was done with felt pen. Two felt-tip pens. The first must have run out of ink. It is hesitant. It must have been improvised there, at the foot of this church.
People come, help themselves. The man in the pew is there, with a pious book in his hands.
I enter the church. Empty. The light is beautiful and the atmosphere respectful. As usual. A woman enters, mask on her face. I sit down. I hesitate about the photos. Don't you dare. But do it anyway. The result is "lame". Badly exposed, badly framed, not assumed. Too bad. Just know one thing, any photo that's triggered and not assumed will be missed. CQFD.
The bag of the man on the bench is there, facing the front door, or the back door, as you wish.
I come out, greet the man. He doesn't answer. His eyes look behind me, through me.
I walk away. He hasn't been back on the bench all day. The church was open today...The pew was used as a place for sports and as a perch for crows, and tonight all the books found takers.
