From field to plate, solidarity for the homeless in Lyon
Since the beginning of the confinement, acts of solidarity have been taking place in Lyon. While associations and individuals usually act each in their own field, some initiatives help to link the different actors acting for the most disadvantaged. Samuel Dedieu, manager of the Casa Jaguar restaurant in the 6th district, wanted to get involved from the very beginning of confinement to help people on the street. He then suggested to transform his restaurant into an accommodation centre with a capacity of eight people until the end of the confinement. A proposition to make his premises available to the homeless was submitted to the prefect at the beginning of the confinement, who will eventually refuse the request. However, the restorer refused to give up. He discovered by chance the association "Donner la main, don de soi" in the press and contacted its president.
Jean-Marc Roffat, president of the association, willingly accepted the restorer's help. He contacted the Confédération Paysanne du Rhône and joined the agricultural union. On April 26th, he joins Jérôme Guinand, member of the Confédération Agricole du Rhône in his farm, the Ferme du Mornantais in Mornant. Since the beginning of the confinement, this is the second time that the farm has been transformed into a solidarity logistics centre after having provided the Lyon SAMU with a hundred or so baskets filled thanks to donations from around twenty producers in the region. This time again, the producers of the region mobilized massively to take part in the operation. A refrigerated van was entirely filled by Jean-Marc Roffat, Jérôme Guinand and the volunteers involved in the association. At the same time, a second van is filled at the Grange Pradel farm in Saint-Romain-De-Popey and will deliver the products to the Lyonnais restaurant at the end of the afternoon.
The next day, April 27th, the chef of the Casa Jaguar restaurant, Hicham Balit, with the help of his team, will compose dishes according to the donations. The food will be cooked twice a week by the chef and his team, and distributed during the marauds over the next few weeks. At the same time, a dozen volunteers will be wandering the streets of Lyon to distribute the donations received the previous days. They cover part of the Presqu'ile on that day and distribute the food to the hundred or so homeless people who live in the area. According to Jean-Marc Roffat, there are nearly 900 homeless people in the Lyon metropolitan area without any possibility of accommodation.
