Riadh, a young mobilisation 2.0 - Algiers
February 22, 2019, the first Friday of a long series of demonstrations, was first an event organized on social networks and launched as a bet. A gamble that worked on Facebook and Instagram before being concretely exported to the streets of the country. In spite of a poor quality network, always controlled, the social web appears today as an essential tool in this Smile Revolution: a bubble of air where young people and all the demonstrators can continue and share their struggle.
Riadh Touat, a young 33-year-old Algerian, is a typical example. This pharmacist by training is mostly known today in the country for his 2.0 activism via his Facebook page Wesh Derna? (What are we doing?) which has more than 105,000 followers. Since 2017, he has been sharing his home-made creations there: short films, testimonials from Algerians on the situation in the country, social and political thoughts, etc.
