Ukraine : Ecole dans le métro à Kharkiv
Ukraine : School in the Kharkiv metro
In Kharkiv, 2,000 pupils are currently attending school in the metro, sheltered from the Russian bombardments. Among them are 600 primary school children, some of whom have never experienced a normal form of schooling between the COVID crisis of 2020 and the war that began in 2022.
While this number is still tiny compared with the 56,000 pupils currently in the city, it does mean that this minority will be able to attend school in a normal way. But for this minority, it means that they can benefit from lessons with a teacher, in a classroom and in a secure location, instead of having to do their schooling online from home like the majority of the city's other pupils.
School in the metro came into being at the height of the bombings in 2022, when some 160,000 people took refuge in the metro. Initially taught on the platforms, classes were later moved to classrooms built above the tracks. There are now five metro stations equipped in this way, spread out geographically across the city so that families can find one not too far from home.
