Pierre Larrouturou's conference: "How to stop a climate bomb like EACOP?
On November 16 2022, Pierre Larrouturou, S&D MEP, and member of the Committee on Budgets, was in conference at Lille 2.
Accompanied by Lucie Pinson, founder of Reclaim Finance, and Soraya Fettih, campaigner for 350.org, their conference was entitled "How to stop a climate bomb like EACOP?"
Soraya Fettih and Lucie Pinson began by reminding us of the role of citizens, especially young people, in speaking out and participating in collective actions. Between activism, civil disobedience, or demonstrations, young people were called to move to counter polluting projects.
Pierre Larrouturou detailed the nature of Total's project, and showed the possible solutions. The EACOP project is a pipeline project that aims to connect oil from the Lake Albert region in Uganda to Tanga on the Indian Ocean in Tanzania. It would be the longest heated pipeline in the world.
Responsible for 34 million tons of CO2 released per year, the project would be devastating for the biodiversity of the territories, for the climate, and for the populations, who would be expelled from their lands, without financial compensation or not enough to live.
"Sometimes we wonder if we are Homo Sapiens Sapiens, or Homo Debilus Debilus", or "Vampires are afraid of the light, Patrick Pouyanné is afraid of public debates" could be heard in the amphitheater.
