IN SEARCH OF A DREAM
It's November 20, 2021 and I've just arrived at what will be the Gemma squat, named after an elderly woman from the neighborhood who had a long history of activism. She passed away recently this year. The wind is cool, we are quickly freezing, and in front of us the tension is palpable. The opening of a squat is always a major stress factor for activists, and the wait is feverish for the dozens of young people housed a few hundred meters higher up in tents while the temperature drops day by day. Gemma is located on the slopes of the Croix Rousse in Lyon, a historical district of the silk industry since the 14th century. This place, very touristic, makes you dream with its garden of plants, the rise of the Grand'Cote, its funicular which is unique in the world. Behind the postcard decor, there is misery, that of young migrants who camp in tents on a small square. They have been "dropped" by Forum Réfugiés, nearby, two hundred meters away, and find themselves on the street. There are about 40 of them, between 15 and 20 years old, sharing the asphalt with tourists. When the history of these young people is not validated during the assessments carried out at Forum Réfugié, they have to return to the street, which is very frequent. This is how this camp was born, on the slopes of the Croix Rousse, practically under the walls of Forum Réfugiés. In the absence of a solution proposed by the city or the prefecture, volunteers worked hard to open this squat. Often retired people, who act in the place of the institutions. Below are photos of the camp, of the new Gemma squat, of a neighborhood party held to raise awareness of the migration problem and to collect some food for the squat, and finally a boxing club that offers young people the chance to find their purpose by learning to box for free. These young people have a dream. To get better, to have a roof over their heads, to work, to study, to eat their fill, to not be so cold that they can't sleep. They dream of a more stable life, almost "normal" if they try to make normality a dream.
