Monastery of Nea Moni
The Monastery of Nea Moni was built around the year 1050 and has almost a thousand years of history. According to the legend, three monks guided by the Holy Spirit found an icon of the Virgin and asked the help of the Byzantine emperor Constantine IX Monomachus to build a monastery at the place where the icon was found. The complexity of the architecture and the richness of the place prove that imperial funds must have been used for the construction of the building. Nea Moni was destroyed twice:
In 1822 by the Ottomans during the Chios massacre when 2000 people took refuge in the monastery. They were killed and the monastery was burnt. An ossuary is still there today to remember. You can also see the marks of the swords left on the skulls.
An earthquake in 1881 destroyed the monastery and the church again.
The monastery of Nea Moni was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 and was renovated in the 2010s. In the church the mosaics have been largely preserved (59 out of 97).
