AIX-EN-PROVENCE - Bénédiction des Calissons
Un peu d'histoire...
En 1629, la terrible Peste dévaste une partie des habitants d'Aix. L'assesseur Martelly, en janvier 1630, à la tête des notables et du peuple, assiste à la grand-messe et fait voeu de célébrer chaque année un bureau d'action de grâce dédié à la Vierge des Seds, patronne de la ville d'Aix.
Jusqu'à la Révolution, chaque 1er septembre, les cloches de la ville sonnaient pour rappeler le voeu de Martelly. C'est à l'un de ces bureaux que furent remis les calissons d'Aix. Les calissons bénis par l'archevêque étaient distribués à la congrégation en chantant "Venite ad Calicom". (Venez tous aux calissons). Au fil des siècles, cette tradition du voeu de Martelly s'est perpétuée.

A little History...
In 1629, the terrible Pest devastated a part of the Aix inhabitants. The Assessor Martelly, in January 1630, heading the prominent citizens and the people, witness the Grand Mass and take a vow of celebrate every year an Grace action office dedicated to the Virgo of the Seds, patron Saint of the City of Aix.
Until Revolution, every 1st september the bells of the city ringed to remember the Martelly's vow. It is at one of these offices that were given the Calissons of Aix. The blessed calissons by the Archbishop were distributed to the congregation singing ''Venite ad Calicom" (Come all to the calissons). Along centuries, this tradition of the Martelly's vow perpetuated.
