Distribution of iftar meals to families in need
Tkiyet um Ali (Food for life in Arabic) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization established in 2003 under the leadership of Princess Haya bin al-Hussein. The foundation aims to fight hunger and malnutrition in the Kingdom of Jordan and implements several food distribution programs throughout the year. It is financed notably by the zakat of individuals, the obligatory alms in Islam, and claims to support 20,000 families in need.
The month of Ramadan is intensive for Tkiyet um Ali, which conducts reinforced donation campaigns and organizes a special food distribution for iftar, the meal to break the daily fast. While the organization usually welcomes families in its center in the heart of Amman, since the beginning of the pandemic the modalities have changed.
The distribution now takes the form of hot food parcels, distributed to partner associations in the neighborhoods who redistribute them to the inhabitants. For those who request it, a home delivery is even possible in order to overcome the difficulties of travel and to preserve the dignity of the beneficiaries.
