Performance "Natures Mortes" by Anne Imhof at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
"For nine exceptional nights, Anne Imhof presents a major new performance work in the heart of the Palais de Tokyo.
In the spaces designed by the artist for her carte blanche exhibition "Natures Mortes", the bodies of the performers come together, mingle and collide, before dispersing and disappearing into the public.
Having taken over the entire Palais de Tokyo for the first act of "Natures Mortes", Anne Imhof, winner of the Golden Lion at the 2017 Venice Biennale for her piece "Faust", presents a new performance that captures the pulsations of the ephemeral cycle of life and the burning intensity of present time.
Since 2012, Anne Imhof has surrounded herself with a group of close collaborators, including Eliza Douglas, a number of whose paintings are featured in the exhibition and with whom the artist has collaborated on sound works and performances. Anne Imhof's team of performers, including long-time collaborators Frances Chiaverini, Ian Edmonds, Josh Johnson and Mickey Mahar, come from a variety of backgrounds, and their diversity allows each new piece to be approached from multiple angles. Whether they are dancers, models, poets or musicians, each performer brings their own world and aesthetic to the work.
Their sequences and movements are programmed, regulated to the smallest detail. The personality and sensitivity of each performer are brought together in an environment that allows a permanent dialogue with Imhof. During the performance, the score is adapted in real time, allowing the action to respond to the dynamics of the spectators present, who also become part of the constructed images."
